HELPING NATIVE STUDENTS PREPARE FOR STEM CAREERS

Supporting the Next Generation of Tribal Leaders

Today’s Tribal members are working toward better economic development, environmental stewardship, and improved health outcomes in their communities. But Native professionals are underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields – because Native students aren’t getting enough access to STEM education.

Tribal Health offers free STEM education programs for all our service communities. Easy to integrate into existing classroom plans, our digital learning and curriculum delivery platform includes::

  • Interactive lessons, activities and assessments for students
  • A library of quizzes, tutorials and teachers’ guides for instructors
  • A student portfolio of work and proof of skill to show on college and job applications

One goal of our program: increasing Indigenous representation in medicine. We know Native physicians and nurses can build deeper trust with patients and provide care consistent with their values, beliefs, and cultural traditions. Currently, only .4% of physicians are Native American – and we believe health equity includes parity in clinical representation.

However, we also believe that supporting Native STEM representation can serve Indigenous interests in climate change resilience, digital and technological equity, economic health, and innovation across all fields.

We must grow our own and invest in our future – and it starts in the classroom.”  President and Chief Nursing Officer Whittney LaCroix (Sicangu Lakota)
