Announcing the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering

You’ve probably heard the incredible news by now: our founder Dr. John Shufeldt has helped found Arizona State University’s new medical school – the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering.

In doing so, he has once again changed the game for the healthcare industry.

When Medicine and Innovation Collide

There’s a saying that “every company is a tech company.” From business operations to customer service to sales, nearly every organization leverages digital tools to compete, innovate, and thrive. You don’t hear people say it that much about medicine, though. When most people think of a healthcare experience –  whether it’s a lung transplant surgery or a flu shot – they think about a physician or nurse administering hands-on care.

If you work in healthcare, you know it’s a little more complex than that. And we’re not just talking about back-end functions like billing or IT. Our clinical front lines are immersed in technological innovation. AI-powered tools, telehealth, remote patient monitoring, and mobile health are handling everything from diagnostics to patient triage to tracking vital signs. 3D printers are producing finger splints, prosthetic parts, and organ models. Mobile tools can provide real-time insights and critical patient updates to staff moving between facilities.

So we’re beyond thrilled and proud to say that our founder Dr. John Shufeldt has played such an instrumental role in developing a groundbreaking medical school. The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering will partner with HonorHealth to train students in medicine, engineering, technology, and humanities. The school also has an interest in helping to improving care on Indigenous lands. Graduates will not only earn a doctorate in medicine and a master’s degree in advanced medical engineering, they’ll gain experience in entrepreneurship and the venture capital sector.

The result: multidimensional physicians with the power to transform the future of healthcare.

Envisioning the Next Generation of Physicians

If you know Dr. Shufeldt, you know he has always been a visionary with an uncanny ability to “see around the corner.” Urgent care, telehealth, culturally responsive care on Tribal lands, funding healthcare startups – he’s blazed a lot of trails but this may be one of the most profound in transforming the future of medicine.

“From the inside, I’ve treated patients in overcrowded emergency departments, I built companies to address health care inequities, care in underserved areas and improve the efficiency and improve the patient experience,” he said. “But one truth with a capital T stands out to me: We don’t simply need more physicians. What we do need is more physicians who can innovate, who are leaders, who can do it with a high degree of compassion. That’s why I’m so excited about the new school at ASU because I know that’s what we’ll be teaching.”

The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering has received preliminary accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME.) It’s already recruiting its inaugural class who will begin in August 2026.

In other words – if you know a future physician, they shouldn’t sleep on this opportunity. This isn’t just a med school, it’s the med school that will prepare tomorrow’s best and brightest physicians to revolutionize the future of healthcare.
